How Mondiale VGL invests in sustainability and well-being

For the December 2023 issue of our ICCNZ Newsletter, we’re pleased to showcase how some of our members are carrying the ‘spirit of giving’ and making a difference all year round. Mondiale VGL is one of them, and the range of initiatives that they support is vast. ICCNZ vice-president and Mondiale VGL’s International Supply Chain BDM, Francesco Petrilli tells us more here.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us. At Mondiale VGL, we know that our industry and the future of our business depend on it. That’s why we support a wide range of different initiatives aimed at increasing the positive impact we have, both on our staff and on our communities at large.

Here are some examples of initiatives that we’re proud to be involved with.

Children’s health and well-being

This year marks our 10th year supporting Cure Kids, most recently as a Diamond Sponsor. Their motto is simple yet powerful: “Big research for little lives”, and their goal is to raise funds to support key health research projects including childhood cancers, learning difficulties, mental health, dental health, and so much more.

In 2023, the highlight of our involvement has been the 24-hour Cure Kids challenge, which saw 18 teams (including ours) cycling and running non-stop for an entire day – all in the name of raising funds for a great cause.

In the same spirit, we also back the Child Cancer Foundation, a New Zealand charity that provides support to children and families on their cancer journey. Needless to say, this initiative holds a special place in the hearts of our whole team.

Mental health initiatives

The importance of fostering a healthy work environment cannot be overstated. That’s why Mondiale VGL support Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) in Aotearoa New Zealand. This year, for example, the theme was “Five Ways, Five Days” – an encouragement to try one new thing each day to boost our well-being. Our office, warehouse and transport teams spent the week connecting, learning and being active.

Extending our reach

As part of our commitment to our communities at large, not just here in New Zealand but also overseas, we’re proud sponsors of the Taveuni Eye Project in Fiji. Launched in 2005, this initiative aims to give sight to children and adults from remote rural areas of Fiji. Volunteers include doctors and nurses, and all treatments are free to patients.

Thousands of Fijians have benefitted from this project so far, and many more could be helped, thanks to sponsorships like ours. If you’re interested in contributing, please feel free to contact the secretary of the Rotary Club of Taveuni here.

Reef recovery programme

Last but not least, we have partnered with international shipping and logistics operator ANL to work towards a more sustainable future for our oceans.

Our reef recovery project has made significant progress: in 2023 alone, 500 corals (50%) were out planted in genotype clusters to degraded sections of hard substrate, and 50% of the nursery was restocked with new coral fragments. Plus, we delivered a continual cycle of 50% out plant and 50% restock, assisting with coral growth and survival.

It might be just a drop in the ocean, but every drop – no matter how small – matters.
